Summer Wardrobe Essentials To Up Your Style Game

Wardrobe essentials are the key wardrobe items to reach for to create almost any outfit. They are pieces that can be mixed and matched to create any number of looks and are the ‘work horse’ items in your wardrobe. Whilst we all love a key trend, you’ll find yourself reaching for your wardrobe essentials time and time again, so they always worth spending as much as you can afford on these crucial pieces. To up your style game this season, I’ve selected my summer wardrobe staples.

1. White T-Shirt
Perhaps the simplest and least exciting piece on today’s list, however, the simple white tee should not be underestimated. Pair with jeans, chinos, shorts, midi and maxi skirts, and layer under slip dresses because you can never go wrong with this classic summer style staple.

2. Tan Sandals
The flat tan sandal will get endless wear over the summer season as it can just as easily be worn with jeans as it can be with skirts and dresses. There are plenty of fun, colourful options out there, but you can’t go wrong with tan as it is timeless and, as a neutral, pairs with everything in your summer wardrobe.

3. Midi Skirt
Saving skirts for best is a thing of the past and midi skirts are the perfect way of getting out of a jeans rut. Forget the mini, the midi is where it’s at – floaty, flattering and lightweight, this summer style essential will keep you cool and yet effortlessly stylish on even the hottest days. Invest in one you love that you can pair with trainers during the day and heels for night time.

4. Denim Jacket
The perfect jacket for those cooler mornings, the denim jacket’s popularity never seems to wain. Throw over dresses and pair with midi skirts – just try and avoid a denim-on-denim look, unless that’s a look you’re particularly trying to achieve. Without a doubt, the denim jacket is a perennial summer wardrobe staple.

5. White Shirt
A classic white shirt is another versatile summer wardrobe essential. It can be worn with jeans, shorts, skirts and under dresses. Available in a variety of styles and fits, gone are the days when a white shirt was only worn in the office. As well as adding a touch of class to casual outfits, the white shirt is also perfect for enhancing the appearance of your tan.

6. Basket Bag
Lighter summer attire requires complementary accessories and the basket bag is the queen of the summer bag. Ditch your dark coloured leather bags in favour of natural straw designs. Some brands are also offering personalisation on their basket bags as a stylish extra.

7. Midi Dress
When the sun is shining and the weather is warm, tight or restrictive clothing can be your worst nightmare. This is where the midi dress comes into its own – whether plain or patterned, billowy and breezy, the midi dress is everything you need to beat the summer heat in style. Choose looser, less fitted styles to stay cool and chic in the heat. The same summer style rules apply to maxi dresses too.

8. Straight Leg Jeans
In recent years there’s been a definite move away from the skinny jean towards a more relaxed look. Straight leg jeans are a great day to night denim option and suit all body shapes. Pair with trainers or flat sandals for a daytime look, then throw on a pair of heels for an instant nighttime look. Just remember to choose a light wash for a summery vibe.

9. White Trainers
This simple white shoe is an absolute must-have for every wardrobe. Look for slightly dressier styles than your simple sports trainer to keep your feet looking fresh all summer. Pair with jeans, shorts, skirts and dresses, the white trainer is the summer equivalent of winter’s black ankle boots.

10. Straw Hat
Whilst protecting your skin against the harmful and ageing effects of the sun, the summer straw hat adds an extra element of style to your summer wardrobe repertoire, with some brands now even offering SPF50 in their hats. Not just limited to the beach, the straw hat is perfect in the city too and instantly elevates your look. Choose from wide-brimmed glamorous styles or the classic Fedora, this perennial trend is a guaranteed classic.

11. The Perfect Sunnies
There’s no better way to finish off a stylish summer outfit than with some sleek sunglasses. With plenty of styles available to try, it’s important to choose a pair that flatter your face shape. Spend some time trying on different styles and colours until you settle on a pair that suit your face shape and personality. Sunglasses can be the perfect way to let your personality shine through, should you choose. So whether you rock a classic pair of aviators, a kooky pair of brightly coloured shades or look chic in an oversized design, this is one summer accessory you definitely should not be without.

12. Blazer
The trend that dominates every year has traditionally been paired with jeans or cigarette trousers. However, 2019 has seen the blazer paired with dresses and skirts and even as stylish suiting when paired with summer shorts.

13. Shorts
Denim, tailored and even cycling or bike, shorts have made a huge comeback for SS19 and offer a chic alternative to skirts. To avoid a Daisy Duke look with your denim shorts, size up and wear them lower on the hip. Pair with a boho blouse for an instantly cool summer vibe.

14. Espadrilles
What is summer without a pair of espadrilles on your feet? A perennial favourite and available in both flat and wedge designs, espadrilles are great option for summer as they pair well with everything from shorts to maxi dresses. Toss them into your beach bag and they will take you from day to night in an instant. Choose a wedge design to instantly make your legs look leaner. Available in a wide variety of colours, the espadrille is perfect for adding a pop of colour into your wardrobe.

15. Statement Earrings
Without a doubt, the accessory of the year is the not-so-subtle statement earring. Instantly elevate your look with a pair of stylish statement earrings. Available in metallics or brightly coloured options, this ear candy should not been saved exclusively for night time. Rocking a pair of gorgeous statement earrings during the daytime adds an extra element of style to your look.
